Elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1994, 1996 and again in 2000. Elected to NC Senate in 2002. Chosen as Senate Minority Whip, an unusual honor for a freshman Senator.


Passed CPA exam while still in college and went to work for Arthur Andersen & Company in their Charlotte office. Worked as a CPA for various employers, including the US Government, until returning to Union County in 1991 and opening an office in Marshville. Clients ranged from small businesses to large corporations and covered a multitude of industries. In addition to professional practice as a CPA, Fern has served as Town Manager or Administrator of Indian Trail, Marvin and Marshville.
